What Food Works Best For A Barn Wedding?

Table of Contents

Barn weddings have become incredibly popular over the last few years and honestly, it’s not hard to see why.

If you’ve ever been to a barn wedding, you’ll know the relaxed, sociable feeling they deliver in an environment that’s rich with character and feels appropriate for the celebration of love they’re hosting.

They’re easy to make your own, too, and it instantly feels like it’s your day, which is the exact vibe you want to give off all day.

Whether that’s long banquet tables, fairy lights everywhere, outdoor drinks in the sunshine or a packed dancefloor later in the evening with everyone’s shoes abandoned under the tables somewhere, barns really do make the best canvas for the day.

And naturally, the food tends to work best when it fits that atmosphere too…

At Kemp & Kemp, we’ve catered at barn weddings all over the place over the years and one thing we’ve learned very quickly is that the most successful barn wedding food usually isn’t the most complicated, it’s actually pretty straightforward.

It’s the food that feels generous, relaxed, seasonal and genuinely enjoyable to eat with the people you love.

Because ultimately, barn weddings are all about atmosphere.

Why Barn Weddings Need A Slightly Different Catering Approach

Barn venues are brilliant, but from a catering point of view they can sometimes be… interesting.

Some have excellent kitchen facilities and easy supplier access, while others are essentially beautiful empty spaces in the middle of the countryside where we need to bring in pretty much everything ourselves.

We do mean everything, by the way.

We’re talking kitchen equipment, refrigeration, prep space, staffing areas, power solutions and service equipment, among other things.

For marquee weddings in fields, there can also be considerations around water access and generators, which people understandably don’t always think about when they first picture the wedding day itself.

So… long story short, the catering approach isn’t just about food prep and cooking!

That’s why barn wedding catering requires a caterer who has been there, done that and got the honorary t-shirt, which may or may not say ‘Kemp & Kemp Catering’ on it. Just saying.

The logistics behind the scenes are a huge part of making the whole thing feel seamless on the day.

Sharing Feasts Work Beautifully In Barn Weddings

If there’s one style of catering that naturally suits barn weddings, it’s sharing feasts.

Long tables filled with generous platters of seasonal food just work incredibly well in those spaces and fit perfectly into the atmosphere barn weddings lend themselves to.

Relaxed, sociable and welcoming is often the vibe we’re asked to create with barn weddings, though that doesn’t necessarily have to mean sharing platters or buffets.

But with them, guests tend to naturally interact more around the table, people pass dishes around, conversations flow more easily and it creates a lovely warmth in the room very quickly.

We often find that sharing-style dining gets guests talking much earlier in the day too, particularly when families and friendship groups are mixing together for the first time.

There’s something about passing roast potatoes to someone’s Great Aunt (you’ll see her again on the dancefloor) that breaks the ice remarkably quickly.

Barn weddings also lend themselves well to moving with the seasons, which means summer weddings are great for outdoor cooking (weather permitting), colourful salads, lighter sharing dishes and menus with a bit of a Mediterranean feel to them.

Whereas autumn and winter weddings often feel amazing with slow-cooked meats, rich sauces, comforting seasonal veg, warm desserts and comfort food for the evening.

There’s something glorious about leaning into the countryside feel of a barn wedding rather than trying to create an overly formal restaurant atmosphere in the middle of a farm field somewhere.

Speaking of which…

What Evening Food Works Best At Barn Weddings?

Evening food becomes really important at barn weddings because they tend to be long, sociable days.

By the time guests have had drinks, danced for several hours and exhausted themselves attempting questionable dance moves, people are usually absolutely starving again.

Some of the most popular evening food for barn weddings are wood-fired pizzas, loaded fries, tacos, burgers, grazing tables, and fish and chips – anything with an outdoor food van or food station is always a win!

And honestly, evening food is often one of the parts guests remember most because everyone’s relaxed by that point and fully into celebration mode.

The key is keeping things easy, informal and fun.

So, Can Formal Dining Still Work In A Barn?

Yes!

Barn weddings don’t automatically mean rustic buffet food served on wooden boards (although that is always a fun option).

Elegant plated dining can look incredible in barn venues too, particularly with long candlelit tables, beautiful floral centrepieces, seasonal menus and a relaxed pace throughout the day.

The important thing is making sure the catering still feels connected to the atmosphere of the venue itself.

Very stiff, formal dining can sometimes feel slightly disconnected in relaxed countryside settings, but elegant food absolutely still works beautifully – we’re all about that at Kemp & Kemp.

One thing couples often worry about is whether guests will “prefer” one style of food over another.

But the thing is, it’s so much more about the experience and the hospitality than the specifics of the style you choose.

As long as everything ties together and feels like it’s meant to be, your guests will have a fantastic time and remember that the food tasted great, the hospitality was fab and they got on like a house on fire with the strangers (now their best friends) on the table.

The best barn wedding food usually feels generous, seasonal and relaxed.

It suits the setting, it encourages people to gather around the table properly and it becomes part of the atmosphere rather than simply another item on the running order.

At Kemp & Kemp, we always encourage couples to think about the feeling they want to create at their wedding.

Because the food is one of the things that brings everybody together and at a barn wedding especially, that warm, sociable atmosphere is what people remember long after the last glass has been cleared away.
