Where it all began

Kemp & Kemp Catering were set up by husband and wife team (Richard & Karen) in 2010 after they suffered 4 weddings in a single year. The food was typical of wedding food – and you know what we’re talking about because we’ve all suffered it – bland, lukewarm, characterless, lacking in colour, excitement or taste.

They reckoned that with their combined talents as a creative cook (her) and award winning project manager (him), they could fill a massive gap in the market by providing simple, FABULOUS, homemade food for weddings.

They also decided they would NEVER create set menus, NEVER limit their clients in what they could eat and NEVER buy things in (they make everything themselves from scratch). This means that each client has the opportunity to add their own creativity and can personalise their wedding food. They also decided they would NEVER have hidden extras, NEVER charge corkage, and ALWAYS remain calm, nice, responsive and very, very well organised with NO last-minute panics.

This approach was born from their natural instincts and both now feel that it was their lack of training in ‘the catering industry’ that meant they could abandon the rule book since neither knew what was in the rule book! It has worked too – for three years (and having clocked up close to 300 weddings now) the Company have been voted (by their loyal and well-fed clients) ‘Wedding Caterer of The Year in The West Midlands’ in The Wedding Industry Awards.

The company is purposefully small so that they never lose the intimacy or attention to detail that comes from knowing every client as a pair of unique individuals, with their own priorities and needs – so for example big caterers fix mass tastings with hundreds eating together – – whereas Kemp & Kemp will cook a selection from each client’s menu, so couples can see precisely what the food will look like and taste like on their day.
